As with much new technology, the principles of
the gps for hiking were first used for military purposes. In fact the entire global positioning system was developed by the United States Department of Defense in the 1970s. In fact until 2000, the military had modifications which limited the accuracy of civilian GPS units. When these modifications were removed,, the marked improvement of GPS accuracy a very popular treasure hunt game called geo-caching.
A GPS for hiking his many uses and they used by hunters, fishermen, hikers, the military as well as by Geo-cachers. As mentioned above, geo-caching is a popular treasure hunt game which developed right after the military removed the restrictions on GPS units. Essentially a “treasure” is hidden and coordinates are published.Treasure hunters then search for it, and when they find it they may take something from the treasure as long as they replace it with something else. For example, if you found such a treasure you might
take a small matchbox car as long as you
replace it with an old CD or some such item. The Magellan eXplorist GC is the first gps for hiking made especially for geo-caching.
